Today, I like to post about the office suite from rival companies though out the history of computers. Yes, I’m taking about Apple and Microsoft. As you know, Apple has iWork, while Microsoft has Microsoft Office. Both of these are very popular among Mac users, and now iOS users (Yes, Office and iWork are available for iOS. iWork is just Pages, Keynote, and Numbers).
IWork for mac is great too, but it seems like it’s missing something that ties it all together. Either way, it is still one of the top office suites for mac (mostly because it’s free). After the release of iWork 09, they completely redesigned the layout and the application icon. Everything looks like iOS 7. Pages is a powerful word processor that lets you create stunning documents, and comes included with most Apple devices. And with real-time collaboration, your team can work together from anywhere, whether they’re on Mac, iPad, iPhone, or using a PC. Platform: Mac, PowerMac, Mac OS X 4.4 out of 5 stars 513 ratings. Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock. IWork '09, Apple's office productivity suite, is the easiest way to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations the Mac way Creating the perfect brochure, flyer, report, or resume is faster.
Lets go back in time for a while. The first office suite from Apple that I used was Apple Works 6, which I enjoyed very much. It had everything conveniently in one application. Although it was discontinued in 2007, Apple has carbonized the application, so it works on Mac OS 9 and OS X. Apple Works 6 had a colourful interface with multiple programs all-in-one with a word program, a spreadsheet program, a drawing program, program, and a database program. It’s basically a mix between Mac Paint, Mac Write, and Mac Draw for OS X. Everything you will ever need in an office suite is right here. One of the cool features is that you can use multiple programs at once. The word processor and the draw program can be on-screen at the same time. It can still run on intel macs, but you will need Snow Leopard or earlier because it is a Power PC application, which is a bummer. My primary school used Apple Works until they replaced it with iWork and everyone was disappointed. The official support website is still up and running, so if you haven’t converted to iWork, you still have some support from Apple.
iWork for mac is great too, but it seems like it’s missing something that ties it all together. Either way, it is still one of the top office suites for mac (mostly because it’s free). After the release of iWork 09, they completely redesigned the layout and the application icon. Everything looks like iOS 7. If you like that, you won’t really notice it. It has the ability to open recent or make a new document, which I don’t really like because it comes up every time you open the application. You can do the same thing from the file menu. Even though they took out the inspector, all of the tools are no the right. There s no cluttered interface with all of the features trying to get your attention. It’s simple, elegant, and innovative.
Microsoft Office, on the other hand, has been around on the mac since Mac OS 7. It’s been a long journey, and it’s still cluttered. Everything is front and centre, with a ton of menus and sub-menus. As Microsoft puts it “it’s for power users”. It has a ton of features that iWork doesn’t have, but I usually use the software that comes with the mac. Yes, there are features, yes it’s cluttered, but if you need to get work done, Microsoft advises you use the go to the Office (haha, pun).
There you have it, the battle of the office suites. Who won, it’s up to you, but it’s all based on your usage.
In Apple news: The iPad event is tomorrow!
P.S. I was watching an older video on the Power Macintosh vs Microsoft computers and they mentioned Cyberdog and OpenDoc. I saw that you could put a fully functional website in a document. Is this possible on OS X and if it is how do you do it? If anyone knows, please comment. Thanks!
